AK :: the red huckleberry

I mentioned in a post earlier in the summer that our family is big on berries.  At that time it was strawberries, right before I left home for this AK vacation it was raspberries {I actually have a post to write on those} and when I get home it will be huckleberries.

While in Alaska we can also enjoy an abundance of huckleberries.  At home they are purple…here they are red.  They are everywhere and as with most huckleberries you have to work hard and search long to fill the bottom of a bucket.  However….as my parents were making their property here work just perfect for them they noticed a lot of huckleberry bushes around their place.  They began to clear away the brush so the berries could thrive and that is just what they’ve done.  Thrive!  All around, amidst spongy paths of moss there are lots and lots of huckleberries.

My mom makes yummy jellies and desserts and Noah can’t seem to get enough of them, right of the bush.

  1. Are they smaller in size than blueberries? I know how hard it is to fill a pint with those as that was a job I had one summer. Ten cents a pint, was my pay. Ahhh.. memories of standing there and getting the best tan I ever had!
