taking time

I try to be practical. I want to be practical. Gas prices seem to force me to be practical.  I choose to stay home as much as I can and I’m happy with that. It’s so important for me though to spend some quality time with my kids and yet I do struggle with the ‘getting away’. I really appreciate my mr. who is willing to jump in and take over my ‘chores’ when I’m gone…which includes milking the goat.  He never complains.  I’ve been needing some time with my girl.  I don’t think that we’ve gotten away, just the two of us, since she was 11.  We planned a short get-away to do some of the things that we enjoy the most::yarn shops, fabric shops, tea and 2nd hand stores.  We also love book stores. [i read her a children's book from one of our favorite authors]  :)   That’s it.  That’s really all we did.  We did a fun loop in our state that kept us pretty close to where she lives [which is 5+ hours from me].  We live in such a beautiful state with amazing diversity and beauty. Driving from my place in E.WA [listening to podcasts makes the time go so fast] to the west side then through the Puget Sound area makes me feel like I get to experience a little bit of everything.  It was a treat to get away from the ice and mud and see for myself that there are places fairly close to me that are having some warm days with green grass and flowers.  It’s coming my way…soon…soon…soon!

It’s pretty sweet to share the friendship that I do with this girl.  I know…I really know that I cannot take it for granted. We have a way of bringing enrichment to the other and we could do nothing together all day long and still have fun.

**we went and saw ‘the vow’ – great movie.  we both loved it. it’s so pro-marriage and i find movies like that very refreshing.

such beauty

I see so much beauty in this charm…

**the two items in my last post that were more difficult to identify are kombucha [a drink] and kefir grains [to make kefir].  with a quick ‘search’ you can see for yourself how incorporating these living foods in your daily diet can be very beneficial.

friends from my kitchen…

There are certain things in my kitchen that I adore::the sight of bread dough overflowing from my bread maker that faithfully makes me three loaves of bread each week even though it should only make two. [keeping my eyes open for a back-up...i couldn't live w/o it], the accumulation of fresh milk in the fridge [so glad it comes by the quart or half-quart]…even after using a gallon yesterday for ricotta cheese, there is still so much in there.  I also love my fresh eggs [and the chickens that they come from].

Do you know what the other two items pictured are?

**as I was naming this post, ‘friends from my kitchen’ I realized that everything but the milk has a sort of ‘life’ to it…believe me, that frightens some.

***I have a recipe that I want to share with Ellen [reader, friend, fellow Boho gal and sister farmgirl] so I thought I would share with all of you.  Chile Relleno Casserole

on this first day of spring

my winter friend came for a visit again last night, in fact it’s still visiting. it feels less like a friend though this morning. you see i take a lot of comfort when i look at the calendar and see that spring is ‘officially’ here. this time of year can always be a bit tortuous for the spring/summer enthusiast. nearly each day greets us with a little rain/sleet/snow/wind/hail/sun and often all of the above yet i can’t help but watch for a receding snow/ice line. lately i’ve been letting my chickens free range and with each new day they are drawn to the small areas that are opened up to them…those newly opened areas encourage me to get out my seed packets and plot my garden but when i look at the garden it is still covered in a heavy layer of snow and ice.  [sigh]  it’s ok…this too shall pass…it always does.

the finch, chickadees and red-winged black birds don’t slow down at all. their songs are of spring.

yesterday i purchased the ‘perfect ingredients’ [so they say] for a new soil recipe to make soil blocks for my garden seeds. the snow cannot deter me from getting those made for new seedlings to ‘spring’ forth. i wish i could bottle up some of my emotional energy for gardening that i have right now to get me through the hard work that summer really brings. i just can’t wait to get my toes and fingers dirty but i must say, i fizzle…each year brings a determination to do better. truth be told:: it’s the weeds…they are my joy suckers… therefore, life suckers!  [what can i say]

for now, we will keep the fire stoked and i will make allowances for this fresh blanket to bring comfort as i get ready for a gathering of gals to celebrate spring and friendship this afternoon.  we’ll sip tea, exchange seed packets and talk of gardening with some special tips slipped in for herb gardening.

when our spring weather arrives my momentum of energy will allow for productive energy. i can feel it generating!

a near spring day with the nieces

so many pictures that show a fun day with the nieces. their favorite visits are the ones where we go from one thing to the next…keep it fun and busy.  they are so easy to please because they love life. we went to visit a little farm across the valley where there is a new little one and a fun variety of other animals. our weather has been as crazy as it gets…with spring struggling it’s way to meet us as a baby chick fights through it’s protective shell for freedom. boots were a necessity for the day so we slipped them on and headed out.  that little baby goat was the sweetest, softest, cuddliest little guy…he might be named pierre.  so sweet  [i'll take one]

then we came home, let out our goats and enjoyed our own little menagerie as the girls grabbed their own cameras

they seem to think that they should craft while here and wanted to recycle something from the recycling bin so we cut up pop cans and pushed them through the sizzix [i love that little machine] to make cute flowers.

they practiced their goat-milking skills and they’re getting better.

once it was dark, we didn’t turn on the tv and pretended that the electricity was out.  we lit a fire, a lantern and candles and played games and read books…no ‘lights’ until bed-time when the night light stayed on.

such sweet, beautiful, busy girls [who are expecting a tea party today...i better get busy]

tp roll~may day basket

i love days that scream, ‘go ahead, do something useless and trivial and fun’…today is a rainy, rainy day and such a great day to stay home [every day is a good day to stay home]. i always have plenty to do but i’m taking a short break from all of ‘that’ to transform a toilet paper roll.  maybe i just need to prove something to mr t…that there is indeed a viable reason to save an empty tp roll.

with frank sinatra crooning in the background, i fixed a cup of green tea [w/raspberries in it and a fresh squeeze of meyer lemon], set up my old suitcase full of a wonderful variety of vintage paper scraps in front of a large picture window [the birds are so active right now], took out an abandoned-of-it’s-letters scrabble board to protect the white linen table cloth [seemed easier than removing it], grabbed a hot glue gun, paint brush, glitter, dark brown wax, ribbons, silver pipe cleaners and my oh-so-special boho glue.

it certainly has been transformed into…??? – it could hold a small gift [sweet custom soldered charms??] but I think that it’s funnest purpose right now for the diy planner-aheader…a may day basket.

spring lambs

this is an amazing time of year as new life is birthed in all forms throughout our valley

each time we drive through our community and into the next i watch the fields for new sets of wobbly legs, trying to keep up with ‘mom’ for safety, warmth, comfort and nutrition

oh, to be able to get my hands on a little lamb…a little snuggly lamb, no less

can i have one….please?…pretty, pretty please?…maybe three?

refresh

how wonderful to wake up to rain. with our frozen ground it turns our snow into ice but it also brings hope of spring. it felt so refreshing to let the rain hit my face, the air feeling so clean and new and warm at 37°. the goat barn even felt more welcoming with the soft sounds of rain drops coming from above.

it’s a very sweet day to get a double dose of refreshment as I get ready to attend our church service. I love the people there and the blessings that come from it. maybe this afternoon I can curl up with a soft blanket and a good book [my current 'read' is juicing for life...very inspiring].  wow, you want to talk about feeling refreshed…drink a glass of fresh juice from vegetables and fruits. it feels so gooood! it almost makes me want to stop eating and just go to juicing…almost!  :)   [as I go fix a pot roast w/veggies, fruit cobbler, homemade ice cream, biscuits, salad, etc....]

she’s charming

“I’d like this one to be very sweet. soft pink, hearts and maybe some lace. she has the most sweet and gentle spirit and I’d like to try to convey that…just think soft and sweet…”

making custom, one-of-a-kind~for-someone-special charms is a favorite part of what I do and it’s also a challenge when I don’t have specific, exact instructions [i.e. 'here's the photo for side 1 and the photo for side 2']

although I don’t generally know the recipient, I like to think about what she might be like as I make a charm for her

what are her favorite colors, hobbies, general likes…

at times I receive the sweetest notes from gals who have received their charms – I love hearing their words of thanks and I always appreciate that they were willing to take time to send a sweet, thoughtful note my way

because…with each little package that leaves my home a sweet little part of me went with it
